Effect of Hydrofluoric Acid Etching Time on Titanium Topography, Chemistry, Wettability, and Cell Adhesion

چکیده
Titanium implant surface etching has proven an effective method to enhance cell attachment. Despite the frequent use of hydrofluoric (HF) acid, many questions remain unresolved, including the optimal etching time and its effect on surface and biological properties. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of HF acid etching time on Ti topography, surface chemistry, wettability, and cell adhesion. These data are useful to design improved acid treatment and obtain an improved cell response. The surface topography, chemistry, dynamic wetting, and cell adhesiveness of polished Ti surfaces were evaluated after treatment with HF acid solution for 0, 2; 3, 5, 7, or 10 min, revealing a time-dependent effect of HF acid on their topography, chemistry, and wetting. Roughness and wetting increased with longer etching time except at 10 min, when roughness increased but wetness decreased. Skewness became negative after etching and kurtosis tended to 3 with longer etching time. Highest cell adhesion was achieved after 5-7 min of etching time. Wetting and cell adhesion were reduced on the highly rough surfaces obtained after 10-min etching time.

The osseointegration of oral implants is related to the early interactions between osteoblastic cells and titanium surface. Chemical surface modification of titanium (Ti) implants is used to improve peri-implant bone growth, bone-to-implant contact, and adhesion strength. Thus, in this study, the surface topography, chemistry, and biocompatibility of polished titanium surface treated with mixe...

Titanium is widely used in biomedical applications from many years for its interesting properties, nevertheless there are a large number of researchers studying the way to improve the performances of biomedical devices. A large number of papers concern the study of “commercially pure titanium” (Ti CP) but, very often, no details are indicated regarding: 1) the type of Ti CP used; 2) the sandbla...
متن کاملEffect of hydrofluoric acid concentration and etching time on the surface roughness of CAD/CAM ceramics
Introduction: Dental ceramics are considered as materials that can restore the appearance of natural teeth. Etching the inner surface of a ceramic restoration with hydrofluoric acid (HF) followed by using a silane coupling agent is a well-known and recommended method to increase the bond strength. The aim of etching on ceramic structure is to enhance the surface roughness (Ra) and energy and to...

Introduction: The use of dental ceramics has increased due to their beauty and biocompatibility. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of hydrofluoric acid concentration and etching time on microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of the Enamic and Suprinity ceramics. Material & Methods: In this in vitro study, two hydrofluoric acid (HFA) concentrations of 5% (A) and 10% (B) were used at t...
متن کاملInfluence of surface topography and surface physicochemistry on wettability of zirconia (tetragonal zirconia polycrystal).
Surface modification technologies are available for tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (TZP) to enhance its bioactivity and osseointegration capability. The surface wettability of an implant material is one of the important factors in the process of osseointegration, possibly regulating protein adsorption, and subsequent cell behavior. The aim of this study was to clarify the effect of topographic...
